From Ayr in Scotland, a county which is highly undulating, the
Ayrshire became robust to survive. The Ayrshire
breed was introduced into Canada at the beginning of the 19th
century by Scottish's colonists.
In 1870, in Quebec, the Ayrshire importers and breeders association
was created. During the 20th century, the Ayrshire breed was selected
and improved by Canadians to make her a modern milking cow. The
breed is still performing today. In 1992, the first cows arrived
in France, imported from several farms in Quebec by a few breeders
from the East of France.

|
This is the second
milk breed in Canada which counts for more than 60 000 cows registered
in the herd book spread over 1 500 farms. Nearly 60% of the herd
is located in Quebec.
The Ayrshire fame has gone out of Canada. Now, it is present in
the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, England, Scandinavia
and since 1992 in France. |

| MODERN FORM |
|
The Ayrshire fits
one's morphology to one's difficulties, being well suited to hard
climate and mountainous countries. The adult cow weights about 600
to 700 kg, and measure about 1.5 meters tall. The Ayrshire characteristics
is to keep a high production level for many years. |

In reality, the improvment
of incomes is linked to the quality of milk. The Ayrshire is able
to realise high production with a good protein rate. |

| THE MILK TYPE |
|
This breed has been
selected in Canada, for centuries, and their milk characters like
others breed more known. Her characteristics are appreciated by
a great majority of breeders, all around the world. 
Moreover, Ayrshires have a great capacity to ingest and transform
rough food. Those exceptional characters of femininity makes her
a notable producer. In 1999, the average production of an Ayrshire
in Canada was 7 029 kg of milk for 3.93% Fat and 3.49% Protein. |

The unanimous opinion
of the specialists, is that the Ayrshire breed has excellent udders,
in particular having high and wide rears with long well blended
in fore attachments. Ayrshire udders presents remarkable qualities
of flexibility, elegance and especially longevity. |

Endowed with very
hard hooves and with solid and dry members, the Ayrshire is used
to spending long winters outside, therefore living up to it's reputation
of a solid cow. Its ease of maintenance and its big rustic character
make it a dairycow of exceptional longevity. |

More than 25 % of
Ayrshire genes is bear the factor Kapa-caséine B.B. No Ayrshire
animal is a bearer of the gene BLAD. Their ease of calving pleases
many breeders. The precocity of Ayrshire heifer allows them to begin
a career from the age of 2 years, without compromising their exceptional
longevity. Finally, their red, often very flowery markings, will
embellish your herd and will know how to seduce you! |
